It is a relaxed, family-friendly seaside hotel, well suited to couples and families who want the beach on the doorstep and the Roman old town within easy reach.

The rooms run from sea-view doubles and a spacious suite to studios and family quadruples sleeping up to four, most with a balcony and air conditioning, and many looking straight out over the water. A modern restaurant serves Italian cooking and a generous continental and American breakfast, and there is a bar, a coffee shop and a small minimarket on site.

Free WiFi reaches every room, parking on site is free, and a paid airport shuttle can be arranged for the 34 km run to Tirana. Guests rate the hotel an exceptional 9.5, with couples scoring it 9.7 and the location at 9.6.

Plan your stay at Hotel Saly

On the Adriatic seafront in Durrës, with a private beach, a pool and the Roman old town a short drive away.

The hotel's rooms

Hotel Saly has seven room types, all with a private bathroom and air conditioning, and almost all with a balcony and a sea or side-sea view. Couples can choose between sea-view doubles, a deluxe double with extra space or a quiet suite, while families and small groups have triples, a superior studio and a standard quadruple that sleeps four. Beds range from a single extra-large super-king to combinations of king, single and sofa beds, so most parties are covered without an extra bed — worth noting, as cots and extra beds are not available. The largest room, a triple with balcony, measures 30 m².

Is this the hotel for you?

Yes, if...

  • You want the beach on your doorstep: the hotel is beachfront with a private beach area, sun loungers and a swimming pool.
  • You are travelling as a family: standard quadruples and a superior studio sleep up to four, and family rooms are available.
  • You are flying in: a paid airport shuttle covers the 34 km to Tirana, and reception is staffed around the clock.
  • You want to eat in: there is an Italian restaurant, a bar and a coffee shop, and breakfast can be brought to your room.
  • You are driving the coast: parking on site is free, which is rare this close to the sea in Durrës.

Perhaps not, if...

  • You want to pay by card at the property: Hotel Saly accepts cash only.
  • You are travelling with a pet: pets are not allowed.
  • You need a cot or an extra bed: neither is available, so pick a room that already sleeps your group.
  • You are visiting out of season for the beach: the seafront setting is at its best from June to September.

Facilities and amenities

For a beach hotel the facilities are broad. The headline is the setting: a private beach area right on the Adriatic, with sun loungers and umbrellas, plus a swimming pool and water-sport facilities for more active days. Dining is taken seriously, with a modern Italian restaurant, a bar, a coffee shop and breakfast that can be brought to your room, while a minimarket on site covers the essentials. Free WiFi runs throughout, parking is free, and reception works around the clock with luggage storage, currency exchange and a paid airport shuttle. Two things to plan for: payment on site is cash only, and pets are not accepted.

Location and what to see

Getting there

Hotel Saly stands on Rruga Pavarësia, on the seafront in Durrës, about three kilometres east of the historic centre along the long sandy beach. Most visitors fly into Tirana International Airport at Rinas, roughly 34 kilometres away and around thirty to forty minutes by road; the hotel can arrange a paid transfer, or a taxi from the terminal takes much the same time. Durrës also sits on the main coastal corridor, so buses and furgons from Tirana run frequently through the day, take about forty-five minutes to an hour and drop off near the centre, from where a short taxi reaches the beach zone. The city has its own train station and a large ferry port with links across the Adriatic to Italy. Free parking on site is useful if you are driving down the coast, as the seafront streets fill up quickly in summer.

What to see

You are on the Adriatic, so the beach is the obvious draw: a wide, shallow, gently shelving bay that has made Durrës the most popular resort in the country, best from June to September and liveliest in high summer. In the old town, three kilometres west, the second-century Roman amphitheatre is the largest in the Balkans and the city's headline sight, while the Archaeological Museum on the waterfront holds the richest ancient collection in Albania beside the Byzantine walls. The fifteenth-century Venetian Tower marks the end of those walls, and the renovated Taulantia promenade runs along the shore for an evening stroll with an ice cream. Spring and autumn are calmer and cooler if you prefer sightseeing to sunbathing; in July and August book ahead and expect a busy, festive seafront. Tirana is close enough for an easy day trip by bus or car.
